On Saturday Est and I decided to make some hamburgers on the braai, but unfortunately when the braai coals were ready to receive the scrumptious beef patties it began pouring with rain (Noah style). Within 10 seconds I was completely wet, head to toe, because the wind was driving the rain sideways.
The umbrella I was using was as useful as a cellphone charger during load shedding. At one stage the wind was blowing so hard my umbrella turned inside out into a cone shape and became like a DIY Jojo tank.
In my wisdom, I said to Est maybe we should do the patties in the oven because I thought I could replicate the Weber effect by using the bottom and top grill in the oven. What was I thinking? 1-2-3 block myself.
Surprisingly, the patties were cooked to perfection but unfortunately our home smelt like cooked beef burger patties. As fortune would have it, I had closed the bedroom door before I started cooking the patties and that kept the smell out of our bedroom to a large degree.
When we had cooked them all, we cleaned up, opened every window that we could and sprayed lovely smelling room air-freshener.
The following morning when I got up I walked out the bedroom to make our compulsory morning cappuccino and all I could smell was cooked beef patties. Even the cappuccino’s tasted like beef patties. As we readied ourselves for church I smelt that cooked patty smell all the time. Even my toothpaste tasted like a beef patty.
When we arrived at church people were very gracious and hugged Est and I without saying “Lovely smell… Brad is that beef patty aftershave?” Or “Est is that perfume new… Chanel No. Beef patty”
But here’s the lesson for us.
When we accepted Christ as our Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit indwelt us and as we walk and talk and go about our daily life… He is like a fragrance that goes with us.
Paul in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians, chapter 2 verse 15, said “For to God we are the fragrance of Christ among those who are saved and among those who are perishing.”
That fragrance of Christ is through the indwelling and the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us and through us. Why not be that sweet smelling fragrance of Christ to all those you connect with today.
PS. Right now, two days later, we are still trying to get the beef patty aroma out of our house. And yes, thank you to all of you who sent us home remedies to get obtrusive smells out of the home. We are trying them all and the law of averages says one should definitely work.
